Semaglutide and Cholesterol: What the Evidence Shows
Weight loss often improves lipids, and semaglutide cut cardiovascular events in one trial. The honest picture.

The short answer
Losing weight commonly improves cholesterol and triglyceride numbers, and in the SELECT trial semaglutide reduced major cardiovascular events by about 20% (relative) in adults with established heart disease and obesity who did not have diabetes (Lincoff et al., NEJM 2023; PMID 37952131). That is a meaningful finding for that specific population, not a cholesterol drug claim for everyone.
What this means
Improvements in lipids on a GLP-1 are usually driven by weight loss and better metabolic health. The cardiovascular benefit in SELECT applied to a high-risk group and used the brand medication. Semaglutide is not a substitute for a statin or other prescribed cholesterol treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Does semaglutide lower cholesterol?
Weight loss on semaglutide commonly improves cholesterol and triglycerides. It is not a dedicated cholesterol drug, and improvements are largely driven by weight loss and metabolic health.
Did semaglutide reduce heart risk?
In the SELECT trial (PMID 37952131), semaglutide reduced major cardiovascular events by about 20% (relative) in adults with established heart disease and obesity without diabetes. That applies to that population and used the brand drug.
Can semaglutide replace my statin?
No. It is not a substitute for prescribed cholesterol treatment. Coordinate all of your medications with your physician.
Does compounded semaglutide have the same heart data?
No. The cardiovascular data is for the brand medication. Compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved or reviewed, so that data cannot be assumed to apply.
Does New Hope check my labs?
Dr. Sharma reviews baseline labs, including lipids, and monitors over time. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.
