Limitations of BMI

BMI is a useful screening tool but has important limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, a muscular athlete may have a "high" BMI while being metabolically healthy. It doesn't account for fat distribution, abdominal fat carries more health risk than fat elsewhere. And it doesn't consider age, sex, or ethnicity differences in body composition.

That's why physician evaluation matters. At New Hope Weight Loss, Dr. Sharma considers your complete health picture, not just a number on a chart, when determining treatment eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What BMI do I need for semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Approved product labeling commonly uses BMI 30 or higher, or BMI 27 or higher with at least one specified weight-related condition. The exact indication and criteria differ by product, and a calculator cannot determine eligibility.

What counts as a "weight-related condition"?

Approved product labels list product-specific weight-related conditions for certain BMI thresholds. A clinician must apply the exact label and review the complete history; this calculator cannot determine eligibility.

Is BMI the only factor in eligibility?

No. A clinician reviews product-specific criteria, possible contraindications and cautions, current medications, and the complete health history. The intake supports that review but does not determine eligibility or appropriateness by itself.
