Why People Look for an Ozempic Alternative

Ozempic® is a registered trademark of Novo Nordisk A/S and is approved by the FDA for specific uses. But for many people it's hard to get: list prices can exceed $1,000/month without insurance, coverage is inconsistent, and the 2024-2025 shortages showed how unreliable access can be. That's why so many search for a more accessible alternative.

New Hope Weight Loss is not affiliated with Novo Nordisk A/S. The dispensing pharmacy label identifies the compounded preparation as semaglutide. It is a different product from FDA-approved brands, is not FDA-approved or brand-identical, and results vary.

What Ozempic Is Actually Approved to Treat

Ozempic is the Novo Nordisk brand of semaglutide, and its FDA labeling covers three uses that are all tied to type 2 diabetes. The first is improving blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. The second is reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults who have both type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. The third, added by the FDA in January 2025, is reducing the risk of sustained eGFR decline, end-stage kidney disease, and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. That kidney indication is carried by no other semaglutide or tirzepatide brand.

What the Ozempic label does not include is chronic weight management. Weight change reported in its diabetes trials was a secondary observation, not the approved purpose. Novo Nordisk has a separate semaglutide product, Wegovy, that carries the weight-management labeling, and Ozempic labeling is limited to adults while Wegovy injection labeling reaches adolescents 12 and older. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, acting on one incretin receptor; tirzepatide, the molecule behind Mounjaro and Zepbound, acts on two.

None of this describes a compounded preparation. Compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved, is not brand-identical, has not gone through FDA premarket review for safety, effectiveness, or quality, and results vary. Ozempic and Wegovy are registered trademarks of Novo Nordisk A/S, and New Hope Weight Loss is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Novo Nordisk. Dr. Sharma reviews your history, including kidney and cardiac history, before any prescribing decision.

Ozempic is approved for diabetes. I do not have diabetes. Does that matter?

It matters for how you read the label. Every FDA-approved use of Ozempic requires type 2 diabetes: blood sugar control, cardiovascular risk reduction in adults who also have established cardiovascular disease, and kidney risk reduction in adults who also have chronic kidney disease. Chronic weight management is not on that label at all. Whether a compounded semaglutide preparation is appropriate for you is a separate clinical question that Dr. Sharma answers during your consultation.

Does the Ozempic kidney indication apply to a compounded preparation?

No. That indication belongs to the FDA-approved Ozempic product from Novo Nordisk, and it rests on trials of that specific product in adults who had both type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. A compounded preparation is a different product that has not gone through FDA premarket review, so brand findings cannot be assumed to carry over to it. Tell Dr. Sharma about any kidney condition during your intake.

Is Ozempic a weight loss drug?

Not according to its FDA labeling. Ozempic is approved for blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes and for cardiovascular and kidney risk reduction within specific diabetes populations. Weight reduction seen in those diabetes trials was a secondary finding rather than an approved use, and Novo Nordisk markets a separate semaglutide product for chronic weight management. What is prescribed here, when appropriate, is a compounded preparation, not a brand product, and it is not FDA-approved.
